Description
This course focuses on system administration and tuning tasks. This course is suited for a certification curriculum.
During the course attendants will Install perform a network installation of Linux and learn common system administration tasks of Linux.
Audience
Users and Administrators of Linux systems, that want to certify. People that do not need to certify but want to expand their knowledge knowledge of Linux on system administration.
Topics
In this course the following topics are presented:
- Installing Linux over a network.
- Automating installation (Kickstart / AutoYaST)
- Management of Linux file systems: ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs, isofs.
- The Logical Volume Manager LVM and Software RAID.
- System Security: Advanced user and group management, SUID, SGID, file attributes (lsattr), chroot.
- File system Quotas.
- Startup, shutdown and run levels.
- Binary kernel upgrade.
- On-line kernel tuning.
- Compile source code. GNU Build environment and building SRPMS.
- Debian package management.
- Advanced X Windows.
- Network security inetd, xinetd, tcp wrappers, ssh.
- Relational Databases: SQL Language.
- Localization and Internationalization.
- Assitive technologies for the disabled.
- Clock synchronization with ntp.
- Syslog server.
- Scheduled jobs with cron and at.
- Backup and Recovery.
- E-mail basics: aliases, .forward, MTA's.
Format
A 5-day instructor lead training with a presentation by an experienced Linux instructor. Each subject is be followed by a lab session where the knowledge is used in practice.
Prerequisites
Experience with using Linux at the level of LI121 sys admin I. specifically:
- Install Linux and manage software with a package manager.
- Working with the command line.
- The vi editor.
- Output re-direction, pipes and text filters.
- Linux file system permission bits rwxrwxrwx.
- The Linux file system layout ; location of important files and directories.
- The X windows system: DISPLAY variable, Display and Window managers.
- Mounting filesystems.
- Understand and read POSIX shell scripts.
